Home / Chicken rings
Are you wondering why you would ring a chicken? The answer is two-part and depends on whether you also go to exhibitions with your chicken or if you only have your chicken as a hobby.
But in both cases, chicken rings do make it easier to distinguish your chickens from each other.
All information about the chicken is linked to the ring number on the chicken ring, such as whether the chicken has been vaccinated. This is why it is important that if you want to take your chickens to shows that your chicken is ringed.
This method works because the hen gets a ring with color of that year on it at a young age. And at a later age the ring can only be removed by cutting it open.
The chicken must be ringed with an official fixed foot ring that can only be ordered from the federation.
The chicken rings that we offer are not approved for this purpose.
As a hobbyist, you are not required to ring your chicken. But with pinch rings for chickens you can more easily distinguish your chickens from each other, though.
With grow rings for chickens you can greatly reduce re-ringing to prevent ingrowth. This is because the high elasticity of these grow-in rings allows the ring to adapt to the chicken's leg as it grows.
We ourselves also offer these grow along rings for chickens. The small ring height offers the possibility of placing different colors on top of each other, thus greatly expanding the marking possibilities. By means of a E-Z Ring Gun you easily put the grow ring around the chick's leg.
These "grow along rings" (E-Z Elastic rings) do give something but will also grow in when the chick gets too big and the clamping of the leg becomes too strong.
In particular, it gives a little more tolerance and usability because the rings are very easy to roll off the leg when it is necessary to change to a larger ring.
It is best to ring your chicken/chick between the ages of 5 to 8 weeks. For chickens with leg feathering, it is recommended to ring at 5 to 6 weeks of age.
It is mainly that you need to follow the growth and at the last moment push the closed foot ring over the toes so that it cannot fall off.
So when to ring also depends on the individual chick and its growth.
Because there are different breeds of chickens, each with their size, there is not 1 universal ring size for chickens. You can find your chicken's ring size in our ring table, either via the search bar or under 'poultry'. You can also find the ring sizes per breed on this page.
